A Brazilian Blowout is the brand name for a keratin treatment that is heat sealed to curly hair to straighten. This is not to be confused with a Brazilian Bikini Wax which is nowhere near the scalp and involves removing hair not straitening it. *smiles*
My hair stylist has been doing this keratin treatment on my hair since 2013 and I don’t plant to ever stop having it done. My hair looks so amazing and now I can grow it out long without looking like a giant tumble weed.
How often you should get a Brazilian Blow out re-done depends on how fast your hair grows. My hair seems to grow like a weed growing nearly an inch an month so I try to get the treatment done every 2 months. I have waited as long as six month but by then my frizzy roots have puffed out my hair into a brown triangle so I try not to wait so long between keratin treatments.
Some people mistakenly think when they see their normal fuzzy roots growing out compared to the straightened Brazilian Blowout treated hair that it has damaged their hair. Not true. The longer you go without getting your hair re-treated all the natural frizz will grow out in its normal fuzzy way and the straight hair will go further and further to the ends of your hair as it is old growth.
Your hairstylist will charge you based own how long your hair is because it will take longer and use more product. Based on how damaged your hair may already be with split ends or other damage your stylist may recommend trimming the ends before applying the keratin treatment. The before photo is about 4 – 6 months since the last Brazilian Blowout and of course the after photo is at the hair salon immediately after getting my hair done.
I usually get my ends trimmed and sometimes want it shorter. I don’t like sleeping on my hair when it’s long because it makes my neck sweat or itches my neck. My preference is for chin length hair so I usually have it trimmed to that length. Even that short it can take 2 to 3 hours to do my hair.
I love the Brazilian Blowout compared to relaxer kits. I used the home relaxer kits for years. Some can damage hair so badly it feels like an old straw broom. Others aren’t so harsh but they never got my hair as straight as with the keratin treatment. If you have sensitive skin the relaxer kits can burn your scalp. Or if your hair is really fragile the home relaxer kit can make the hair break off. I have tough hair so I’ve never had that happen but the one brand that made my hair feel like straw made me worry my hair might break off in clumps. Fortunately for me that never happened.
Care of your hair after the Brazilian Blowout. Yes, you still have to flat iron your hair daily to keep it straight. And if you don’t straighten it after washing your hair it will look curly just not as curly as without the treatment. I could do the wet look with a riot of curls if the mood struck me but I usually make the time to blow dry and then flat iron my hair.
After washing it I go as far as using hair clips to section off my hair (after I’ve blow dried it) and then flat iron the individual sections. On a regular non hair washing day I just section it randomly and flat iron the sections. I’m a bit lazy when it comes to doing my hair because years of frustration with my fuzzy hair have left me with little desire to spend lots of time using hair tools on it. LOL
