If you are like me you’re always searching for better hair care products. I want it to moisturize and tame my curly hair but I don’t want it to clog my pores. Back around 2015 I read a health article on the benefits of coconut oil for internal and external use. What really caught my eye was using it for hair care.
I have fuzzy, fluffy, curly hair that I torture with blow drying and flat ironing. Plus I color my hair and use keratin treatments applied by a hair stylist. My hair takes a lot of abuse but still grows like a weed. I just don’t want it too look like a tumble weed so the use of a natural product appealed to me.
Coconut oil keeps my hair conditioned and soft and shiny. No sticky or crunchy feeling to my hair like with gel and mousse products. And a big positive is no zits or acne ringing around my hair line or on my checks. Coconut oil can be used as a skin moisturizer so not unpleasant pimples for me. It works great for dry hair and should be good for normal hair but might be too much for oily hair. My sister has oily hair and she feels like coconut oil is too much for her hair.
I strongly recommend trying coconut oil for your hair. Especially if you don’t like to use products with a bunch of chemicals you can’t pronounce. It would be good for children’s hair too. The brand I’m currently using the brand Spectrum and it’s a food grade organic coconut oil refined with medium heat.
There are other brands that have unrefined coconut oil but I don’t like them as much. They tend to be grainy and you have to rub the oil in vigorously to make the grains dissolve. A little bit of coconut oil goes a long way. It melts easily and will melt and drip from hands quickly so rub it into your hair fast! I’ve had drips land on the floor and that can be a slipping hazard or be messy to clean up.
Spectrum’s packaging is a glass jar with a clean logo design giving off a healthy vibe with an image of an open coconut on the label. I found a 14 ounce jar on sale at the grocery store for $4.99 which is a good value for the large amount of coconut oil in the jar. It can last a year or more depending on how much you use it. For example if you also use it on your skin or as a makeup remover you’ll use a lot more product than if you only use a dab on your hair.
I only add coconut oil on freshly washed and towel dried hair. I feel like it works well keeping my hair from drying out when I use a blow dryer. I make sure to rub it all through my hair because if too much oil gets in one spot my hair will look oily. Occasionally when my hair is feeling flyaway and too poufy I’ll rub in a dab more coconut oil.
Let me know if you try coconut oil on your hair and if you have seen a positive change in your hair.
